From February to July 2002, 132 samples of yogurt were randomly collected from different markets and analysed for aflatoxin M-1 by ELISA procedure. AFM(1) was detected in 49 (37.12%) of yogurt samples ranging from 50-800 ng/l. These samples were over the legal limit established by the Turkish Food Codex. It is concluded that, high level occurrence of AFM(1) in yogurt was a serious human health hazard. For this reason, control measures are to be undertaken to avoid AFM(1) contaminations of milk.
