Özet

Different concentrations and application methods of iodine were applied to alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivation (local cultivar Elci) in 1998 and 1999 at,the Experimental Field of Ankara University. First year iodine concentrations were 0.0, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 kg/ha as a powder of potassium iodide (KI) and applied to the soil after seeding. In the second year foliar application of iodine was performed at the same rates as the first year in the form of a solution of potassium iodide (KI) two weeks before the first cut. It was found that alfalfa accumulated iodine even it had no effect on the forage yields. Although statistically. insignificant, green, dry matter and crude protein yields of third and fourth cuts and total dry matter yield of all cuts in 1999 increased with increasing iodine rates. Plant iodine concentration, increased with increasing iodine rates. Foliar application of iodine in 1999 was more effective in increasing plant iodine concentration than the soil application in 1998.
