Özet

Introduction: Recent clinical studies have suggested that significant number of patients is not diagnosed using the standard systematic sextant prostate biopsy protocol and proposed new biopsy protocols as increasing the number of cores. From that point of view, the aim of our study was to evaluate the frequency of prostate cancer detection in standard 6 and 8 core biopsy protocols. Material and Methods: We performed sextant biopsies in 202 patients and sextant plus two far lateral midregion biopsies (total 8 cores) in 71 patients who had PSA values between 4.0-10.0 ng/ml. The results of prostate biopsies in 273 patients were retrospectively reviewed and the detection rates of prostate cancer in two groups were compared. Results: For standard 6 and 8 core biopsy groups, the detection rates of prostate cancer were 22.27 % and 23.94 % respectively. There was not a statistically significant difference between cancer detection rates in two groups (p>0.05). Two of 17 patients in 8 core biopsy group had diagnosis of prostate cancer only in their lateral biopsy specimens. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the detection rate of prostate cancer does not increase with two extra lateral midregion biopsies to standard sextant biopsy.
