Testing the nutrition-teaching self-efficacy scale developed for primary school teachers

Özet

This study has been carried out to apply the Nutrition-Teaching Self-Efficacy scale (NTSES), which was previously developed by Brenowitz and Tuttle (2003) and applied to primary school teachers working in Mayland, to Turkish primary school teachers and determine the results. 159 male and 191 female elementary school teachers participated. Analyses of variance and independent sample t test were used to compare mean scores on the NTSES and subscale scores to time spent teaching nutrition. Seventy three per cent of the teachers had between 1 and 15 years experience of teaching, whilst 27% had between 16 and 35 years experience. While the average score from the Nutrition-Teaching Self-Efficacy Scale (NTSES) was 34.0 +/- 10.2, the average score from the efficacy expectation sub-scale was 25.5 +/- 8.5 and the outcome expectation average sub-score was 8.6 +/- 2.8. It was found that in terms of the sub-scales of expected efficacy and outcomes as well as the total scores, the differences between the gender, age and length of work experience variables were not statistically significant (p > 0.05).
