The effects of hazelnut husk and other organic materials on hazelnut yield, some soil properties and quality

Özet

The effects of hazelnut husk compost, peat, farmyard manure and chicken manure on hazelnut cultivated soil properties, yield, and quality were investigated. A trial orchard displayed the general orchard properties of hazelnut cultivated soils in the Central and Eastern Black Sea region and it was established with the 'Tombul' type of hazelnut which is more extensively grown in the region. Organic matters were applied on a dry weight basis in the first year, and the residual effects of materials in the second year were determined.order to ascertain the changes in soil properties and yield quality over two years, soil and nut samples were analyzed and the yields of the 'Tombul' hazelnut were determined. The effects of organic material applications on physical and chemical soil properties were clearer in the first year than in the second. While chicken manure and farmyard manure mainly affected chemical soil properties, husk compost and peat generally had more effect on physical soil properties. The yield of 'Tombul' hazelnut was 4,130 kg/ocak in the first year and increased to 4,880 kg/ocak in the second year. Higher 'Tombul' hazelnut yields were found in the chicken manure and farmyard manure treatments. After application of organic materials to the hazelnut orchard, some quality properties were determined, such as the 100-nut weight, kernel percentage, oil content, protein content, shell thickness, kernel size, wrinkle nut, empty kernel, etc. Shell thickness increased with chicken manure applications. The greatest decrease in the amount of wrinkle nuts of 'Tombul' hazelnut resulted from peat applications due to its high water retention capacity. Empty nut ratio decreased in the second year, the greatest effect being exerted by farmyard manure with high potassium content.
