TURKIYE ILETISIM ARASTIRMALARI DERGISI-TURKISH REVIEW OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES, cilt.0, ss.455-476, 2021 (ESCI) identifier identifier

Özet

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) has become increasingly widespread in the field of communication studies since the 1990s in Turkey. These studies have reached a size that can be analyzed. The aim of the study is to reveal the common features and tendencies in MA and doctoral theses in which CDA was applied between 1990-2020 and thus contribute to future studies in the field. 486 theses were accessed through the Council of Higher Education official website and examined in the context of the year, university, department, research topic, CDA approach, language, media type, etc. One of the main findings of the study, which is a literature review covering a thirty-year period, is that the theses are mostly completed in Marmara, Istanbul, Ankara, Gazi and Selcuk Universities and mainly in the Department of Journalism. In theses, where newspaper articles are mostly examined, the most preferred approach is that of Teun Adrianus van Dijk. Another important finding of the study is that the approaches of Norman Fairclough and Ruth Wodak are not very popular with postgraduate researchers in the field of communication studies. The overall findings of the research demonstrate that despite the increase in the number of theses and the diversity in the subjects examined, there is an unequal distribution in CDA theses in terms of media type, media scale, discourse type and CDA approach. This study, which aims to contribute to the future directions of postgraduate communication studies, suggests that these blind spots should be taken into account in order to develop and enrich CDA literature in Turkey.
