Self-esteem and trait-anxiety levels of persons with physical disabilities who live in the earthquake region

The main purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between some of the sociodemographic characteristics of the handicapped who live in the earthquake region of Sakarya city center, and the self-esteem and levels of anxiety of the handicapped. Participants in the study had low levels of education, half were married, nearly half had orthopedic disabilities, and one-third were blind. Among the reasons for handicap, the most common were illnesses, innate handicaps, accidents, and earthquakes. The proportion of those who became disabled after an earthquake was 9.5 percent. Not only have most of the disabled not yet received any medical treatment, but also only a minority are enrolled in special education and rehabilitation programs. Among the disabled, unemployment was common and average income was low. Low rates of self-esteem and high rates of trait-anxiety were found.
