Lignites, which are the most important fossil fuels in Turkey, are mainly used for power generation. Chemical upgrading of the partially poor quality lignites, with relative high sulfur content, represents an interesting alternative. The reactivity of coke, which is produced besides gas and liquid products by pyrolysis, was studied with respect to gasification. The ignition temperature in air and the rate constants of the reactions of coke with carbon dioxide and hydrogen were determined for this purpose.
