In our study, a total of 354 vaginal swab specimens taken from patients admitted to the health center in Ankara with the complaints of vaginal discharge and pruritis have been investigated. Vaginal specimens were inoculated to SDA and Blood Agar and unstained and Gram stained fresh preparations were also examined. 78 yeast were determined from vaginal specimens. The isolated yeast were identified by conventional methods and commercial Fungichrom test kit. Conventional methods results were in agreement with the fungichrom test kit. The distribution of isolated candida were as follows: C. albicans 39 (50%), C. glabrata 21 (26.92%), C. krusei 9 (11.53%), C. kefyr 7 (8.97%), C. tropicalis 1 (1.28%), C. parapsilosis 1 (1.28%). As a result the predominant species of yeast isolated from vaginal specimens is C. albicans. This study was demonstrated that Candida species can be rapidly and accurately identified by using Fungichrom test kit. We concluded that fungichrom test kit can be used successfully in identification of Candida species.
