This study investigates the lexical associations in the mental lexicon of L3 Italian learners with L1 Turkish background, a topic rarely explored in the literature. Employing a word association task with adjective and noun cues, the study compares the responses of L3 learners to those of L1 Italian speakers. Results reveal distinct patterns: L3 learners tend towards collocational associations with adjective cues, while L1 speakers favour semantic relations. For noun cues, both groups show semantic associations, but L1 speakers demonstrate more nuanced and advanced lexical choices. While interlingual interference from Turkish or English (L2) proved difficult to ascertain with this dataset including a few instances, future research with tailored methodologies could further explore these influences. Additionally, this study tentatively highlights the importance of L1 reference corpora and learner corpora for language teaching materials, emphasizing their role in fostering natural language production and facilitating near-native proficiency in L2 and L3 acquisition.
