The effect of glycerol, an industrial by-product, on the growth of R. glutinis and the synthesis of an antioxidant enzyme catalase, was investigated. The parameters for the growth kinetics were obtained as; mu(max)=0,278 h(-1), Ks = 11,84 g/L. Ki = 174,5 g/L. At high concentrations of glycerol, substrate inhibition was observed. The effect of radical promoters on catalase activity were found to be different in UYM and glycerol containing media. The highest catalase activity in UYM was determined as 5 U/mg, using 20 mM H2O2; while the highest catalase activity in glycerol was determined as 10,24 U/mg using 33 mM of methylene blue. When the dissolved oxygen concentration was maintained as 100% from the beginning of the inoculation, 32,6 U/mg catalase activity was achieved, that was 108 fold of the control media where no extra oxygen was supplied.
