In this study, the effects of shot distance (the distance between the source and the first receiver) on dispersion image were examined for the multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method. The MASW records were measured for a variety of shot distances and the corresponding calculated dispersion images were compared, for a fixed layout. At least one pair of near and far shot records is required for clearly distinguishing the fundamental mode from the higher modes. When a short spread length is used, the near shot distance should be no longer than four times the geophone interval, and the far shot distance should be longer than one-third of the spread length depending on the power of the seismic source. Where the larger spread length is used, the dominance of near and far site effects on the waveform become clear. In this case, the power of the source should be increased or the spread length should be shortened in order to have high signal/noise ratio data.
