Nickel(II) forms complexes of formula NiL with the ONO Schiff bases, N-(2~hydroxyphenyl) salicylaldimine (SAP), N-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) salicylaldimine (SAN) and N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxy-1-naphthylaldimine (NAP), but not with N-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)-2-hydroxy-1-naphthylaldimine (NAN). The complexes are yellow and have two unpaired electrons. They are believed to be polymeric and con - tain pseudo-octahedral Ni(II). The complexes react reversibly with certain monodentate nitrogen donors (L1) to form adducts of the formulae NiLL1 (L1= ammonia and piperidine) which are diamagnetic and probably contain square-planar Ni(II). © 1989, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
