The behaviour of the Al3Fe matrix has been studied in alkaline media in order to simulate the local catholyte chemistry existing on the small cathodic particles on a corroding commercial alloy. The behaviour of both pure iron and pure aluminium has also been investigated and the results compared. It has been suggested that the intermetallic phase behaves like an iron electrode overall.
