Abstract

From February to July 2002, 132 samples of yogurt were randomly collected from different markets and analysed for afiatoxin M1 by ELISA procedure. AFM1 was detected in 49 (37.12%) of yogurt samples ranging from 50-800 ng/l. These samples were over the legal limit established by the Turkish Food Codex. It is concluded that, high level occurrence of AFM1 in yogurt was a serious human health hazard. For this reason, control measures are to be undertaken to avoid AFM1 contaminations of milk.
