Abstract

During a 10 yr period, 108 children born to 56 diabetic mothers were followed up. 14 Neurologically abnormal children were found in the 88 children who were born after the onset of maternal diabetes (16%). The relationship between complications of diabetic pregnancies and neonatal morbidity and late neurological abnormalities is discussed. Possible noxious factors in diabetic pregnancy and in early neonatal course for the development of central nervous system abnormalities in the fetus are reviewed. The importance of careful management of these diabetic mothers during their pregnancies and proper neonatal care of infants is emphasized.
