Abstract

During the past few years, much attention has been given to the design of new dosage forms that increase the effectiveness of existing drugs. The use of this approach has the potential not only to improve the therapeutic efficacy of a drug but also to allow a reduction in the total dose needed, minimizing toxic side effects. Some of this activity has focused on the development of microemulsions. The present article provides a general overview of definition, properties, advantages, preparations, some application areas and recent researches on microemulsions.
