In this study, 206 students from Ankara University Biology Department, were screened and 30 (14.6%) of them were found to be nasal carriers for Staphylococcus aureus. The antibiotic resistance rates of these strains were high of ampicillin and penicillin (93.3% and 90% respectively), followed by gentamicin (26.7%), sulbactam-ampicillin (20%) and methicillin (13.3%), while all strains were susceptible to vancomycin. According to plasmid analysis results, 3 different band patterns were detected. Six of the 21 beta- lactamase positive isolates showed a band of 24 kbp molecular weight which related with beta-lactamase synthesis. In sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis of 30 S. aureus strains, 4 different profiles were observed by means of whole cell proteins, and these results were further confirmed and supported by SDS-PAGE of filtrate proteins.
