Aim: This study aims asessment of awareness level on society about use of biocidal product and it's health effects throughout Turkey.
Method: This study is a cross sectional work which made in 2015 on 12 city. Public Health Institution of Turkey Environmental Health Department, Çukurova, Ankara and Gazi University School of Medicine Public Health Department’s academic members worked together and created a survey form for household. According to the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics which is prepared by Turkish Statistical Institute, 2 phased cluster sampling method was implemented that represent NUT zones. 4617 household were selected and healthcare personnel implemented the survey.
Findings: 4475 person joined this survey, 63.2% of them are woman. Participants are approximately 44.1±14.5 years old. Their educational background is 38.6% primary school degree and 8.2% bachelor's degree. 63.0% of them work unskilled labor. 32.5% of them applied biocidal product to kill pests in their house, 52.0% of them sometimes did it(52.6% by spray and aerosol, 25.9% by hand, 16.5% by pump, 5% others), while doing implementation or later on 14.6% of them reported health complaint(24.1% by nausea-vomiting). 51.1% of them say we are under risk about poisoning while doing implementation or later on. The most known poisoning indicator is nausea-vomiting(75.2%). When doing the implementation, using glove (63.9%) is the most preferred. 45.9% of them don't use any personal protective equipment. 48.8% of them says that ideal biocidal product should be harmless to human and other species, 37.2% of them says that ideal biocidal product should be cheap. 38.6% of them are using unconsciously the biocidal products. 40.2% of them says that biocidal products are very harmful for human health. 5.2% of them says they haven't got any harm. The most stated harm is (53.4%) respiratory system diseases. To be protected from poisoning the most known thing is (76.2%) personal protective equipment, (38.1%) eat or drink anything while doing implementation, (33.3%) work in safe conditions and (31.3%) prevent unconscious using of biocidal products. In case of poisoning (55.1%) remove from the place, (53.0%) eat yogurt, (27.4%) regurgitate will be done. When educational level increases, true implementation reporting and advice center cognition increase too.
Discussion-result: Household need to raise their awareness about biocidal products.
