Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Characterisation of a Novel Mononuclear Boron-Schiff Base Complex

Abstract

A novel boron complex C21H19NO3B was obtained from phenylboronic acid and N-(2-hydroxybenzyl) salicylaldimine in methanol media. The structure was characterized by using IR, H-1-NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray crystallography. In this complex, boron atom is coordinated with the two phenolic oxygen atoms and iminic nitrogen and a carbon atom of a phenyl group in a tetrahedral structure as expected. Although the bond distances around the boron atom were different from one another, the bond angles of O1-B1-O2, O1-B1-N1, 02-B1-N1, O1-B1-C1 and N1-B1-C1 were found close to ideal values as 110.4(5), 108.3(5), 108.4(4), 109.3(5) and 108(2)degrees, respectively. By thermogravimetric analysis it was concluded that the methyl alcohol left the complex at 160 degrees C and a new coordination sphere was formed.
