After studying geography at the Ankara University, Nuri Yavan received his MA degree from the Ankara University in 2001. He worked as a research assistant from 2002-2009 at the same university. During 2003-2004, he won a scholarship from the South Korean Government (NIIED) and served as a visiting scholar at Seoul National University. He obtained his PhD in Economic Geography from the Ankara University in 2006. He became an assistant professor in 2009 and associate professor in 2013 and full professor in 2021 in the Department of Geography at the Ankara University where he has been a faculty member since 2002. Yavan's research interest and published work concentrates on three areas: (1) Economic Geography (site selection, industrial location, clustering, globalization, inward and outward FDI, urban economy, retail and consumption spaces), (2) Regional Development and Policy (entrepreneurship and innovation, regional incentives and supports, development policies and institutions) and (3) History of Geography, Philosophy and Methodology (geographic thought and spatial theory, philosophical approaches and contemporary paradigms, historical and critical analysis of Turkish geography, and research methods). Yavan has published 9 books, 23 book chapters, 11 translated article/encyclopedia entries, 25 research/project reports and 32 articles in academic journals such as Applied Geography, ZFW-Advances in Economic Geography and European Planning Studies. In addition, he has worked as a supervisor, consultant or researcher in 19 projects, 7 of which were international. He has presented more than 140 papers at various national and international conferences. Yavan has won first prize in 3 scientific research competition at national level. In 2005, he won the “YASED Award” from the International Investors Association. In 2006, he received the "Unal Aysal Award" from the Economic Research Foundation and in 2010 he was awarded with the "Economic and Financial Research Award" by the Foundation of Tax Auditors. Yavan has served as a consultant to various public institutions such as the State Planning Organization, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Industry and Technology, KOP Regional Development Administration and Regional Development Agencies and private sector organizations such as OSTIM, DITAM, KENTTAM, VEKAM and TEPAV at national scale and UNDP at international scale, and also involved in the preparation of the 10th and 11th National Development Plan of Turkey. He has organized numerous national and international conferences, seminars and workshops. He also served as a member of scientific committees of more than 50 scientific meetings as well as being a referee for more than 60 scientific journals, international book publishers and research institutions. Yavan currently serves as editor of two globally renowned global publishers, an editor for Routledge's “Dynamics of Economic Space Book Series”, and one of the editors of Springer's “Economic Geography Book Series”. He also sits on the editorial board of 4 scholarly international journals in economic geography, human geography, and economics. Finally, Yavan is a member of various scientific organizations in the field of geography and regional science at the national and international level and currently serves as a Chair of the IGU Commission on the Dynamics of Economic Spaces.
