Özlem SİR GAVAZ completed
her undergraduate education at Ankara University, Language and History-
Geography Faculty, Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures, Hittitology,
in 2002. In 2007, she prepared
her master's thesis titled "Relations with Syria and Mesopotamia in the
Period of I Šuppiluliuma" under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Turgut Yiğit. She
received her doctorate in 2011 with his thesis titled "Cult Trips of the
Hittite Kings and the Ceremonies They Organized for the Gods" under the supervision
of Dr. Sedat ERKUT.
Sir Gavaz, who started working as a Lecturer in the Department of Archeology at
Hitit University, Faculty of Science and Letters in 2008, was appointed as
Assistant Professor in 2012. She received the title of Associate Professor in
2018, and since 2020, she has been working as an Associate Professor in the
Department of Hittitology at Ankara University, Language and History- Geography
Faculty, Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures.
Özlem SİR GAVAZ, who has
many academic studies on the Hittite language, history and culture, also has a
doctoral study, and her book titled "Cult Trips of the Hittite Kings, New
Observations on Rites, Visitation Centers, Roads and Localization" was
published in 2012. In addition, the book "Studies in honor of Ahmet
Ünal", co-edited with Sedat Erkut, was published in 2016, and the book
"Epidemics and Diseases in Ancient Times", co-edited with Gülgüney Masalcı
Şahin, was published in 2021. In addition to national and international book
editing, book chapters, articles, projects and papers that contributed to the
field, she took part in many social and cultural events to promote the Hittite
Civilization. Sir Gavaz participated as a team member in the Kaman-Kalehöyük
excavations carried out by the Japanese Anatolian Archeology Institute since
2009, and then served as the Deputy Head of Excavations in the Yassıhöyük
excavations carried out under the direction of Dr Masako Omura within the same
institute during the 2016 and 2017 excavation periods. Sir Gavaz was deemed
worthy of the "Award of the Young Researcher of the Year" award by
Al-Quds Universitiy- Gazi University- Turkish Studies in 2018. In 2019, she was
presented with an honorary citizenship certificate by Boğazkale Municipality.
She carried out the scientific consultancy of the first phase of the "3D
Scanning of Cuneiform Tablets in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and
Reading of Boğazköy Tablets by Artificial Intelligence" project, which was
carried out in cooperation with Ankara University and Ministry of Culture and
Tourism in 2021-2022. In addition, she continues to lead the project
"Reading Hittite Tablets with Artificial Intelligence", which is the
second phase of the project in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and
Tourism and Ankara University. Sir Gavaz continues to read, transliterate, join
and translate the 250 unpublished Hittite tablets in the archives of the
Anatolian Civilizations Museum, for which the publishing rights have been
granted to her.
