Özet:Attachment Styles and Affective Systems in Adults with Attention DeficitHyperactivity Disorder Objective: This study aims to investigate attachment styles and the primary affective systems related to affective neuroscience in adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Material and Methods: This study includes 39 adults diagnosed with ADHD according to DSM-IV diagnostic criteria who were admitted to the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Adult and Adolescent Unit outpatient clinics between October 10, 2019 – January 10, 2020. Control group consisted of 39 healthy volunteers without a diagnosis of ADHD who were matched in terms of age, gender, and education level. All participants completed Adult Attachment Scale (AAS), Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS), and Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS) and were assessed by Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV(SCID-1). Results: When all participants were evaluated in terms of attachment styles, it was found that Secure Attachment scores were higher in men. In terms of Anxious Attachment style, there was no significant difference according to gender. When ANPS was evaluated among all participants, play scores were significantly higher in men, and sadness scores were higher in women. Anxious-Preoccupied subscores of Insecure attachment were significantly higher in the ADHD group compared to the control group, and it was revealed that this difference was caused by women. ADHD group had significantly higher fear scores compared to the control group, and it was determined that this difference was caused by men. Furthermore, correlation analyses between ANPS and AAS showed that Insecure attachment (Dismissive-Avoidant and Anxious-Preoccupied attachment styles) decreased as age increased in the control group. Meanwhile, fear and sadness scores were correlated with Insecure attachment. In the ADHD group, Avoidant style of Insecure Attachment decreased as age increased, while Secure attachment increased as seek scores decreased. As play scores increased, Secure Attachment increased and both Dismissive-Avoidant and AnxiousPreoccupied styles of Insecure Attachment decreased. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates the relationship between attachment and primary affective systems emphasized by affective neuroscience in ADHD. The results of our study indicate the importance of early recognition and diagnosis of ADHD in adults and early diagnosis and treatment of emotional regulation and attachment problems that may be encountered in adults with ADHD.
