Özet:

This study aims to ascertain the perceived managerial competencies of hospital managers clarifing how they evaluate the importance of managerial competencies, how often they maintain the managerial roles and also to provide hospital managers useful assessment tool for managerial skills and roles. Managerial competencies in the survey for hospital managers were administered by Rubin Pillay; managerial roles were administered by Henry Mintzberg. Ratings were based on a five point Likert scale that is ranging from none to very high level. The six competencies identified were developed into an assessment tool for measuring hospital managers competency level. Managers feel most competent on self management skills, least on IT skills. Skills regarding human relations and ethical issues were perceived to be the most and skills on organizational development issues to be the least important ones. Research findings provide the evidence that 53.9% of hospital managers do not have health management education background. Also it provides the evidence that there is a great need for further health managemet education to fill the competency gap of physician hospital managers. Physicians should have sound management education preferably at university graduate level.
