Abstract

The rapid evolution of online journalism has increased the need to understand the nature, role, and influence of the news media. Drawing on Jürgen Habermas's theory of the public sphere and its role in democratic discourse, this study examines the relationship between online journalism and the public sphere.

The study has four main objectives. First, it seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of online journalism and to examine Habermas's theory of the public sphere within the context of digital journalism. Second, it critically reviews both online journalism and Habermas's theory to evaluate their relevance to contemporary media. Third, it investigates the development of online journalism in Iran and examines its role in influencing public opinion. Finally, it evaluates the applicability of Habermas's concept of the public sphere to the Iranian online media environment.

The findings indicate that online journalism provides a platform for free access to information and news and creates opportunities for individuals to participate in public discussions with fewer barriers than traditional media. It also enables users to select and engage in topics of discussion freely, reflecting several characteristics of Habermas's public sphere. However, despite these democratic features, the study concludes that online journalism has a limited influence on public opinion in the Iranian context.
