To develop the ability to interpret and perform original baroque repertoire on the historical one-keyed flute. To understand the stylistic and technical characteristics of the baroque sonata through selected works by Telemann, Handel, and Bach.To enhance musical expression, articulation, and phrasing based on historically informed performance practices.o deepen the understanding of baroque music’s structure and aesthetics as applied to flute repertoire.
This course provides an introduction to the original baroque flute repertoire for the historical one-keyed transverse flute. Students will work on selected pieces from the Methodical Sonatas by G. P. Telemann (12 sonatas in total) to explore historically informed phrasing, articulation, and ornamentation. The course also includes the study and interpretation of one flute sonata by G. F. Handel and one by J. S. Bach, offering students a well-rounded overview of the German baroque sonata tradition. Technical work includes exercises in tuning, tone production, and breath control specific to the baroque instrument. Students receive weekly individual lessons and are expected to engage in structured self-practice.
G. P. Telemann – Methodical Sonatas: Critical edition or facsimile edition. A collection of 12 sonatas designed to train phrasing and ornamentation in baroque performance.
G. F. Handel – Flute Sonatas: Original sonatas (e.g., HWV 379–HWV 367b), edited for historical performance practice.
J. S. Bach – Flute Sonatas: Selected works (e.g., BWV 1030, 1034, 1035), with attention to historically appropriate articulation and ornamentation.
J. J. Quantz – On Playing the Flute (Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen): English or German edition. This is a key historical source on baroque flute playing and performance practice.
