There are cooperation studies being conducted among coastal states for protecting the Mediterranean Sea area and maintaining its sustainable use within the framework of the Convention for Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution (the Barcelona Convention), a convention which Türkiye is also a contracting party to. In the scope of the Convention; a meeting is held every two years (the COP Meeting) in which the representatives of the 21 countries that are parties to the Convention and the European Union and their senior officials, technical teams and relevant focal points, international non-governmental organizations and members of the press, and scientists participate in order to take the necessary measures to ensure the protection and improvement of the marine environment in the Mediterranean Region and discuss both financial and technical details which will be approved by the parties. At the 21st Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols held in Naples, Italy on 02-05 December 2019, it was decided to hold the 22nd Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols in Antalya on 07-10 December 2021, hosted by Türkiye.
