Proje Özeti

This study aims to investigate the comparative use of interactive metadiscourse markers (especially markers related to authorial voice and stance) by native English and Turkish academics in academic articles produced in English in the fields of linguistics, language teaching and literature. The quantitative dimension of the study, which will use a mixed research method, consists of data analysis using corpus science methods and tools. In the corpus consisting of 240 research articles and 60 doctoral dissertations randomly selected from the academic literature, the use of interactional metadiscourse tools is examined in the light of different variables and criteria such as (a) word [phrase] frequency, (b) collocation frequency, (c) dispersion, (d) L1 - L2, (e) text type, (f) author expertise, (g) different fields and (h) gender. The qualitative dimension of the research consists of questionnaires and short interviews with L1 and L2 authors, journal editors, thesis advisors and doctoral students. Through one-on-one interviews, the perception of interactive metadiscourse tools by academics working as authors, advisors and evaluators (referees/editors) at different stages of academic writing is examined. The findings of the research will be used to develop a training program that will help Turkish academics gain awareness about the use of metadiscourse in academic texts and increase the quality of academic text production.
