Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the impact and importance of forensic anthropology in legal processes. Forensic anthropology, especially as a discipline that studies unidentified skeletonized or severely decomposed human remains, makes significant contributions to various forensic investigations and trial processes. This study aims to analyze the role of forensic anthropological studies in legal processes in detail and to reveal the scientific foundations and practical applications of these contributions. The application areas of forensic anthropology are at the center of the study and biological profiling methods such as sex determination and age estimation are examined in detail. Metric and morphological analyses of skeletal remains enable the scientific acceptance of evidence in legal proceedings. These analyses of anatomical structures such as pelvis, skull and limb bones make a significant contribution to the identification of individuals. The study also focuses on the historical development of forensic anthropology and its status in Turkey. Starting in 1925 with the Turkish Anthropology Institute, this process gained an official characterization and scientific infrastructure was developed with the establishment of the Forensic Anthropology Laboratory in 2004. This laboratory includes applications such as identification of skeletal remains in forensic cases, trauma analysis and re-facialization. This study systematically evaluates the impact of forensic anthropology in legal processes and reveals its multidisciplinary structure and its importance in application areas. Forensic anthropology, which contributes to the increased use of scientific evidence in the administration of justice, is positioned as an important branch of science that will pioneer future research.
